Rik Jordans Writes about Fishing Posted July 19, 2010 by Rik Jordan

Well, the family is back from it's annual fishing and relaxing week on Rainy lake.  It's about as far north as you can get, without causing a rucus with the border patrol of Canada.  The weather was delightful.  But more importantly, no phones, no radio, no tv sets, and no alarm clocks.  My wife and I could sleep until the birds stirred our brains alive.  There's the smell of coffee, cinnamon rolls, and more coffee, enjoyed at a leisurely, measured,  pace.   The only agenda was getting the hook into aRainy Lake  walleye.

How was my fishing on Rainy ?  Horrible. Brutal. Disgusting.   To be honest, there have been years when I've caught ten fish in an hour.  This whole week, we didn't catch ten fish, total.  But, the local guides made me feel a little better, when they said they were not doing  much either.  Remember now,  they had to rustle  up  a shore lunch for their clients.  One guide said that, sometimes, he would bring frozen fillets in his shore-box-kit, just in case he got skunked.  Keep in mind, Rainy Lake has a "slot Limit"  that forces anglers to release fish that are in the 17 to 26 inch range.  So iwith lousy fishing luck, and the wrong size of fish caught, that still leaves you without a fillet.  And they got paid for their talent.

Anybody's guess to  the problem  .  Here's some thoughts that we tossed around.  Early ice out in April.  Water too low (or high).  Mayfly hatch.  Over fishing. Wrong lure color.  Wrong baits.  Wrong depth.   Too much natural forage, allowing walleyes to eat hearty and refuse our little minnows.  Probably all of the above.

One of my many faults is trying to fish memories.  Russ Fransisco has warned me about this fault .  It's like:  just because an orange peel worked back in 1989, doesn't mean that you should drag an orange peel  every July 10th thereafter.

Well, that's my story.  At least I am honest and didn't brag up some lies about my angleing prowess.  Al Lindner I am not, but wait until next year.  Boy will I be smarter.

Keep a tight line and don't horse it.

Hello again, I've missed you. It's been a while I know, but we should be able to update this blog a little more often, and I promise to do this as soon as I can get my act together. Meantime, let's think about the drowned rats trying to survive our weather, and the millions of seagulls at the end of park point chewing on all the  slugs and worms. Happy barfday to you all. Your pal Pat.

The really wonderful thing about blogging, is that we have a chance to interact with you, instead of just talking to you. My concern is that you have a fear of just droping a line to let us know about you. and your interests or concerns. Maybe I should ask a question and let you respond. So here goes.......Should a grandmother be arrested and jailed for slapping her mouthy granddaughter because of her abusive and foul language in a classroom setting?????? Well, what do you think? Let me know what you think.

I launched my pontoon boat on Thursday, thanks to Rik, who rented a trailer to haul it to the launch sight at the end of Park Point. The waves in the bay were horrendous, the temps were in the forties.......brrrrrrr. My son Bill came with, and hummed Nearer My God To Thee, all the way to mooring sight. I aws a little awed at how much he resembled a Japanese Snow Monkey. Anyway it's in the water and witha little bit of luck, the weather will cooperate and we can take the long boatrides we love so much. Hope you are launched and legal as well.See yoy on the water.......Patrick polka poika.

Well, they say "you never know from where you sit, when the lady in the balcony,s gonna spit."And so,we realize once again that in Springtime mother nature can hawk up on us pretty good. I,m trying to get my pontoon ready for a launchand when the off lake winds are gusting at 43 MPH and the temp is like 42, I,m running     for cover and a hot chocolate.......so as I cast my fate to the winds I also cast my eyes to Heaven and quietly ask "For God's sake, why can't we catch a little warmth down by the lake"? And by the way, Rik and I remind you. that if you are fed up with it too.....you can find that gentle but effective relief with the morning show ...5AM to 9AM weekdays on 610 KDAL It,s so much better than Milk of Magnesia!!!!!!     Love to all P.C.

As we get close to the warm days of summer, how about we wipe the winter snow from our eyes, and start thinking about those things we have almost forgotten? For example.....slowing down while driving through a neighborhood where kids might be playing. Those little rascals can jump out in front of your car in an instant, unaware that you even there. Talk about a summer spoiler!! Along those same lines, how about our biker friends?? You've seen the bumper sticker or heard the reminder on KDAL-AM....Start seeing motorcycles....Bikers are for the most part no different than you and me, they enjoy the blue skies and sunny days with a ride on the wind. Most bikers try to drive in a sane manner. The problems develop if they drive in the blind spot behind your car. You can't see 'em in your side view mirror, and may make a quick lane change or turn, which could put them into your quarter panel or trunk. Please watch out for them, okay? One other caution. Some of the bigger bikes such as the Goldwings and BMW's run with no more noise a whisper. You might not know that they are right on your tail. Finally a word for the boaters.....practice what you learned about courtesy and safety. Outfit your boat so that the USCG....Sheriff....or PD will have reason to ticket you. Summer is almost here! Enjoy it, and listen for The Cadigan-Jordan Show weekdays starting at 5:00 AM on 610 KDAL-AM. Well share our goodtimes with you, and you can share yours blogging with us........Thanks so much and let us hear from you.      Pat Cadigan
