Rik Jordans Writes about Fishing Posted July 19, 2010 by Rik Jordan
Well, the family is back from it's annual fishing and relaxing week on Rainy lake. It's about as far north as you can get, without causing a rucus with the border patrol of Canada. The weather was delightful. But more importantly, no phones, no radio, no tv sets, and no alarm clocks. My wife and I could sleep until the birds stirred our brains alive. There's the smell of coffee, cinnamon rolls, and more coffee, enjoyed at a leisurely, measured, pace. The only agenda was getting the hook into aRainy Lake walleye.
How was my fishing on Rainy ? Horrible. Brutal. Disgusting. To be honest, there have been years when I've caught ten fish in an hour. This whole week, we didn't catch ten fish, total. But, the local guides made me feel a little better, when they said they were not doing much either. Remember now, they had to rustle up a shore lunch for their clients. One guide said that, sometimes, he would bring frozen fillets in his shore-box-kit, just in case he got skunked. Keep in mind, Rainy Lake has a "slot Limit" that forces anglers to release fish that are in the 17 to 26 inch range. So iwith lousy fishing luck, and the wrong size of fish caught, that still leaves you without a fillet. And they got paid for their talent.
Anybody's guess to the problem . Here's some thoughts that we tossed around. Early ice out in April. Water too low (or high). Mayfly hatch. Over fishing. Wrong lure color. Wrong baits. Wrong depth. Too much natural forage, allowing walleyes to eat hearty and refuse our little minnows. Probably all of the above.
One of my many faults is trying to fish memories. Russ Fransisco has warned me about this fault . It's like: just because an orange peel worked back in 1989, doesn't mean that you should drag an orange peel every July 10th thereafter.
Well, that's my story. At least I am honest and didn't brag up some lies about my angleing prowess. Al Lindner I am not, but wait until next year. Boy will I be smarter.
Keep a tight line and don't horse it.
